Alkaline Water – What the Experts Say

There is a lot of information available about the benefits of drinking alkaline water, but what do the experts say?   Can alkaline water really help treat or prevent disease?  Can alkaline ionized water help slow the aging process?

With so many claims from so many sources, let’s take a look at a few authorities in the field of health, nutrition and preventative medicine and what they have to say about the use of alkaline, ionized water.

Susan Lark, MD

Dr. Lark is considered one of the foremost authorities in the fields of clinical nutrition and preventative medicine.  She holds a medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School and has served on the clinical faculty of Stanford Medical School.  A widely published author on the subjects of health, nutrition and preventative medicine, Dr. Lark advocates the use of alkaline, ionized water.

The excerpts below are from an article written by Dr. Lark  and Dr. Robert Burns about how athletes benefit from drinking alkaline water.

“If you are overly acidic, an alkaline water device can provide a safe, gentle and effective way of restoring the pH balance of all the cells in your body….

“The benefits of alkaline water created through electrolysis far exceed just its ability to gently raise the pH of cells and tissues of the body….

“Because the alkaline water has gained a significant number of free electrons through the electrolysis process, it is able to donate these electrons to active oxygen free radicals in the body, thereby becoming a super antioxidant….

“Alkaline water is able to block the oxidation of normal tissue by free oxygen radicals.”

In her book “The Chemistry of Success: Six Secrets of Peak Performance” Dr. Lark discusses the importance of maintaining a healthy alkaline/acidic balance.  She advocates an alkaline/acidic diet and only endorses water ionizer units that are electric (as opposed to non-electric alkalizers).

Ray Kurzweil

Most recognized as an inventor, entrepreneur and “futurist,” Kurzweil admits that he had not had any interest in health or medicine until he was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in his mid-thirties.  In his efforts to cure himself, Kurzweil found that alkaline, ionized water had unique properties that not only helped cure his diabetes, but were also beneficial for life-extension.

In his own research and testing he found that “The negative ions in alkaline water from an electrolysis machine are a rich source of electrons that can be donated to these free radicals in the body, neutralizing them and stopping them from damaging healthy tissues.”

Dr. Terry Grossman

A graduate of the University of Florida School of Medicine, Terry Grossman is recognized as a leading authority on natural medicine and longevity.

As the medical director of a family practice clinic in the rural Colorado mountains, he had limited access to specialists. So he began researching and using alternative treatments in his practice.  After 15 years, Grossman opened “Frontier Medical Institute” (now Grossman Wellness Center) in Denver, Colorado, where he focuses on nutritional medicine for treatment and prevention of disease.

In his book “Fantastic Voyage:  The Science Behind Radical Life Extension” Grossman – along with co-author Ray Kurzweil – recommends alkaline ionized water based on its ability to reduce damage from free radicals in the body.

Others

Dr. William Kelly, Author of “Cancer Cure” states that “Alkaline water produced by a water ionizer has become the most important advancement in healthcare since Sir Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin.”

The late (died 2003) Mona Harrison, MD, who was Chief Medical Officer at D.C General Hospital in Washington and who has spent close to 25 years working with scientists and researchers all over the world studying water quality and its impact on health stated:  “Cancer tumors cannot live in alkaline water.  You and I should be drinking alkaline water so our bodies won’t provide an environment for cancer tumors to live” and “Alkaline ionized water is the frequency of the pineal gland and thus affects all other glands below the pineal gland. That is why the water can lower blood pressure and blood sugar, shrink an enlarged prostate, stimulate sex drive, improve vision, improve MS and Parkinson’s Disease, just to name a few.”

In his book “Prostate Health in 90 Days without Drugs or Surgery,” Larry Clapp, PhD, JD writes that “Drinking ionized water raises your cellular pH and fights off the free radicals which would otherwise damage the prostate as well as general health. Free radicals are like cellular “buzz saws” that rip through healthy tissue, destroying everything in their wake. Keeping free radicals under control is vital. Using a small device attached to your faucet, you can make ionized water at home.”

Medical Community

The medical community as a whole has recommended a diet rich in antioxidants for years.  Alkaline, ionized water, which is produced using the process of electrolysis, is “antioxidant water.”  Although few in the medical community have taken the time to study the benefits, alkaline, ionized water does provide what physicians have recommended for years – antioxidants.

Those in the medical community who have studied alkaline, ionized water agree that the antioxidants in the water and the microclustering of the water molecules together offer better hydration combined with antioxidants.  Increased hydration and antioxidant intake have been proven time and again to improve health and reduce symptoms of disease and signs of aging.
